On April 13 the Cascade Senior Government Class traveled to Great Falls to watch court proceedings by Judge Phillips and Judge Grubich. When we first got to the courthouse one of the officers of the court brought us all the way to the top of the copper dome to look out. It was a magnificent view. He told us that during WWII soldiers were posted at the top to watch for planes. Judge Grubich then showed us his chambers and the offices of his staff. The building is so old and beautiful. Next to his office are the cells where they keep inmates during court proceedings. Several students went into the cells to experience the full ambience. Next we headed down to Judge Phillips courtroom to have some time to ask him some questions the students put together. After their questions he had court and we got to watch 7 cases. After lunch we headed up to Judge Grubich's courtroom where we were able to watch several more higher level cases. Something really fun happened at the Cascade School Library recently! Some of our elementary students were “treated” to a Book Tasting as part of their weekly library time. Mrs. Matteson set up tables, complete with cloths and a candle, and had different genres of books available to read. They even had placemats to write on as they discovered things about their books! What a fun learning event for them and bravo to Mrs. Matteson!!

April 8, 2022Dear Cascade Families and Community Members,We only have seven short weeks left of the school year but so much we still need to accomplish. Every day is essential so please continue to stress to your child how important these last few weeks of school are.Our 4th and 5th Grade Science Fair and Parent/Teacher Conferences were big successes last month. Thank you to all who came out to support their child’s education. We had several people attend the science fair and listen to the kids give their presentations. Some of our high school students even participated in the judging for the 4th and 5th grades. At Parent/Teacher Conferences, the classrooms were buzzing with teachers and families working together to celebrate the students’ accomplishments as well as identifying the areas needing support. Even though conferences take a lot of preparation from our teachers, they are so excited to have the opportunity to share the students’ progress.We will begin our SBAC testing on April 20th for the 3rd-8th graders. These tests are mandated by the state and will assess our students’ knowledge and skills in the areas of English Language Arts, mathematics, and, for the 5th and 8th graders, science. The SBAC scores are used to not only gauge the students’ abilities but also the abilities of our school. The testing will take a few days to complete so please be mindful of your child’s attendance during this time and help make sure they are getting the rest they will need to be successful.Monday, April 11th will begin a new reading incentive at the school. The Cascade Elementary and Middle School students will be able to read books for a chance to receive a Kindle Fire 7. The Kindles were donated by the local Masonic Lodge and will be awarded on May 10th. Students will earn reading slips for each book they read on their reading level. K-5th grades will have one winner drawn per grade level, and 6th-8th grades will have two winners drawn for the middle school. Please encourage your child to read a little every night. Not only will this increase their chances for the drawing, it will also increase their reading abilities for the rest of their lives. Cascade Elementary will celebrate Arbor Day on April 28th with the annual tree planting at Atkinson Park. The tree was purchased from the Arbor Day grant award which the town of Cascade received. We would like to thank the town of Cascade for once again allowing our students to take a part in improving their community. DISTRICT MUSIC FESTIVAL IS THIS WEEK!!The Cascade High School music students will be participating in the annual District Music Festival this coming Thursday and Friday, April 7 and 8 in Great Falls. The high school band will travel to the new Student Center at UP Thursday morning and play a couple of prepared pieces for a group of 3 adjudicators (think judges) for ratings and then play a sight-reading piece (one the band members have not seen before), also for a rating. This group has been working hard on their prepared pieces and they practice sight reading almost every day in band, as well. You are welcome to come and listen to the prepared pieces, but must leave for the sight reading piece. Good luck to them all!Friday afternoon, the students in band who have chosen to play in a small group, jazz band, or solo will travel to Great Falls, CM Russell High School, to play for adjudication. These performances are open to the public for listening as well. You will be treated to some awesome students playing their best! Nineteen FFA students traveled to Bozeman to represent Cascade at the State Conference.  Ag issues, Sr. Creed, Parliamentary Procedure all placed 3rd in the State!  Agronomy placed 17th.          

Congratulations to our state science fair participants!  Junior High and High School teams placed 2nd at the state science fair competition this past week.

BUnder MCA 20-3-313, if the number of candidates filing for vacant positions or filing a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate is equal to or less than the number of positions to be elected, the trustees may cancel the election. As of the March 31st deadline, two candidates had filed for the one vacant trustee position, one of whom withdrew their candidacy. The school election has been declared canceled by election administrator, Karsen Drury on behalf of the Cascade Board of Trustees. The Region 2 19th Annual Principals' Cup was Friday, March 25th at Simms High School. Cascade took one team to compete. A team consists of a member from each high school grade level and one member at large. Students for our team are picked by the high school staff. This year's team included Senior Danny Le, Junior Zoe Mazaira, Sophomore Jazmyn Halvorson, Freshman Audrey Rumney, and at-large member Sophomore Jeremiah Creveling. Cascade has not competed for a very long time. The last two years we put teams together but circumstances were such we never made it to the competition (another win for COVID). Competitors take a 100 question placement test a couple weeks before the competition. The team's average score is used to place them in the bracket. Cascade placed in the middle of the bracket from our team's average score. Students can also earn individual recognition from this placement test. Zoe Mazaira's individual score placed her in the Top 10 out of all the Juniors competing.The tournament was double elimination and included teams from Augusta, Belt, Choteau, CJI, CMR, Conrad, Fairfield, Fergus, GFHS, Power, Shelby, and Simms. Each round teams face-off with 16 random questions covering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Pop Culture. If a team answers correctly they get 5 points, however, if they give an incorrect answer, they lose 2 points. Our team was out in two rounds but the students went into it with the right attitude: we were going into it to learn the process and see how we can better prepare next year. The championship round is played in front of the remaining teams in the gym. Both CMR teams battled it out for 1st and 2nd place. Next year the goal is to take two teams from Cascade, which is the maximum number allowed from each school. 

On March 23rd the Student Council attended the District 2 Student Council Conference in Power. The members that attended were Victoria Kirby, Micah Rockwell, Jacob Marko, Sydney Gutierrez, Kayleen McKamey, Madi Ward, Jazmyn Halvorson, Blake Leardini, Audrey Rumney, Nic Deshayes, and Ian McKamey. It was a very well put together convention and the student council had a great time. Jessica Criss, Miss Montana gave a great keynote speech. She talked about what it means to be a leader and the three main things she believes make a leader but how that can mean something different to each of us. Miss Montana is a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and after her speech she showed the group some defensive moves and had the group practice. The Student Council is ready to fend off unwanted attackers while upholding the martial arts honor code. We then moved on to an iron chef workshop where each school had to put together a dessert using all and only the ingredients on the table. Cascade's presentation was top notch and it tasted pretty good. Next was lunch and after that we elected District 2 officers. Jacob Marko ran for several offices and won the Parliamentarian office. He gave a great speech and will do a fantastic job representing Cascade and District 2. We have a great group of leaders and I look forward to seeing how they lead the school next year.
