To: Cascade Community and Potential Volunteers, Cascade Track and Field Overhaul – June 8th and 9th I’m honored to be able to write to the community and other potential volunteers from around Central Montana about this exciting effort. In February, I started meetings with Rick Miller (Cascade Schools Superintendent) and his staff about a volunteer effort to improve the Cascade Track and Field complex. I work for NorthWestern Energy and am the Superintendent of 6 of the Hydro dams in Montana. This job has resulted in me living in the Dearborn Canyon and calling the town of Cascade home for my wife and three young kids. Through my employment, I have an incredible opportunity to provide community service and volunteerism. NorthWestern Energy has a Volunteer and Community Involvement program that has made this all possible. Some of you may remember a NWE led volunteer effort that took place in 2017 that resulted in the old school stage being one step closer to becoming a weight room. That effort also resulted in a financial contribution to the school. This Track and Field effort will be the second volunteer effort and we have made the decision to GO BIG. Through cooperation between the School, NorthWestern, and the local community we have already raised $9,500 for this event. We also have numerous pledges for equipment, food, and labor. That said, we need more people to execute the very ambitious work plan that has been created. We have complete faith that this community will rise to the occasion. We already have nearly 30 volunteers and we are just beginning the recruitment stage. We are targeting at least 80 people for this effort and are looking to identify job leads to help assure that the projects are done in compliance with Track and Field specifications and on time. As many of you know, the track itself is too long. The track is 3.4 meters too long and the surface is no longer in a condition suitable to host meets. In addition, the other event facilities are in need of repair or rebuilding to bring them into compliance with specs and to allow for our athletes to have the best possible facilities. The end goal of this work is 3 fold. #1) bring the track and field complex into compliance with track standards and improve these facilities. The footprint of our complex is large and if rehabilitated, we feel it will result in us being able to host track meets again. Hosting meets will bring revenue into the community. #2) raise money for this event so that the school can support these improvements in a time where the money is tight and funds are appropriately challenged. One end goal of this effort is to raise money and to have a positive impact on the school budget. We are confident that through community involvement and contributions that this will be the case. Our efforts to date show that this community has nearly everything we need to pull this off and to have money left over to put back into the athletics program in the form of improved equipment. #3) through this effort, create excitement for the athletes, provide a venue for people to show their support. Provide opportunities for people to meet each other, support each other and to pull together to reach a lofty goal. Cascade track legend Harry Clark has become aware of this event and has informed us that he would like to attend. This is a great opportunity for our youth to meet an incredible Cascade Montana athlete and ambassador of the sport. Below is a list of the general job scopes, these tasks have been further broken down in a separate planning worksheet. For each task we are looking for volunteers and most importantly job leads with experience in the work task area. Job scopes; Shorten the track and redo the track surface by grading old cinders and adding some new, filling in low spots on the football field and crowning it, dig out the shot put pit add new toe board and re pour pad, dig out long jump and triple jump pits, create a high jump area, paint goal posts, paint concession stand, paint other items as identified, redo the surfaces on the runways of the jumping events, bring discuss ring area into spec, hang and back light a badger on the back of the crows nest, repair damaged bleachers, shore up crows nest access, make field stencils for the 40 yard line, have a site cleanup crew, a safety monitor, and a cooking crew. As you can see, there is a lot going on. Again I’d like to remind everyone that $9,500 is already raised, there have been many community members come forward already and equipment has been volunteered as have materials and tooling. What we really need now are job leads and workers!!
