Greetings!  My name is Sean Thornton and I am excited to be teaching Science at Cascade Public Schools.  I recently retired from the US Army and Montana National Guard after 23 years of service.  Some things I enjoyed in the Army, and some I didn't, but by far the most rewarding was serving as the Executive Officer of the University of Montana (Go Griz!) and Carroll College ROTC programs.  It was then that the realization came to me how much I missed teaching, having taught Science previously at Geyser Schools and CMR in Great Falls.  This is why I am thrilled to be coming to Cascade Public Schools.  This is a community where I have deep roots.  My mother was raised in Cascade and graduated a Badger.  My grandparents lived a couple of blocks from the school and as a result, I spent many of my childhood summers roaming the streets of Cascade and the banks of the Missouri River.  I grew up in Helena and graduated from Capital High School.  After high school I bounced around between colleges, Gonzaga (Go Zags!) and Wheaton College in Illinois where I received my BA.  I then spent several years traversing between Graduate School, fishing boats in Alaska, joining the Army, teaching Science, and fishing the Missouri every chance I could.  With a family consisting of three children, I eventually chose a career in the Army.  But now that my time with the Army is complete, I am thrilled to be returning to teaching here in beautiful Cascade Montana.  

The Cascade Music and PE Departments would like to invite you to our 4th annual Family Folk Dance Night on Thursday, March 21 from 5:15 - 6:30 pm in the North gym. This is a family event we are putting together to provide a fun family activity. If you don’t dance, don’t worry-our students will be able to help you out! They have been learning the dances in music class as well as participating in a folk dance workshop during the day on Thursday, March 21.We will have 2 callers as well as live music for the evening. There is nothing better than dancing to live music! All elementary, junior high, and high school student families are invited to attend.  There will also be snacks and drinks for those who work up an appetite!Hope to see you there on March 21 from 5:15 - 6:30 pm!

FAMILY MATH NIGHTThursday, March 14th 4:30-6:30In the Library Join us for a night of family fun! We will have stations set up in the Library with math games for all elementary ages. Snacks will be provided and all children will go home with some fun activities! 

Congratulations to Cascade High School art students on their selection for the Young Masters art show as part of Western Art Week in Great Falls. Junior Carsyn Otheim’s “Still Life 2023”, was a compilation of personal objects drawn from life in Charcoal. Her piece was selected as a Top 20 piece out of over 50 pieces from area schools.  Juniors Sayre McElroy, Audrey Rumney, and Nordika Goetz also had pieces accepted to the show. Sayre’s piece titled “Echo’s of Emotion”, a collage of acrylic paintings, Audrey's scratchboard “A Bunny Called Daffodil”, and Nordika’s colored pencil “Nature’s Beauty”, along with Carsyn's Top 20 piece will be on display during Western Art Week March 14-17 at the Heritage Inn in the Young Masters room.

Annual School ElectionThe time of year is approaching again for Cascade School’s annual election. The 2024 annual election has two propositions that will appear on the ballot this year for the voters of our districts to vote on. The first is the trustee election. There will be two (2) seats open for election representing the Elementary District 3 & High School District B for a 3-year term. Individuals may file for election until March 28, 2024 at 5:00 pm. To file, the 2024 Declaration of Intent and Oath of Candidacy must be completed and turned in to the election administrator, Karsen Floerchinger or election deputy, Angie Hastings. The form can be found on the school’s website. At this time, the district has not received any applications for candidacy. The second proposition that will appear on the ballot will be to ask the voters to renew the Technology Levy that was originally passed in 2014 for fiscal year 2015, in the total annual amount of $150,000 between the Elementary and High School districts. The Technology Levy is a permissive voted levy, which means the voters must approve the levy and the maximum amount allowed to be levied annually, but the District may levy any amount up to the approved amount. This levy is authorized by §20-9-543, MCA for the purpose of purchasing, renting, repairing, and maintaining technological equipment and to provide technical training for district personnel. This levy has proven vital to our district over the past ten years, allowing us to make huge improvements and updates to our technological infrastructure and providing our students and staff with the tools and resources needed to excel in our current technology focused age. A few of the major improvements and uses of the Technology funds include providing our students and staff with 1:1 devices, updating all security cameras in and around the school, along with implementing other safety and security measures, upgrading the PA and sound systems throughout the school, replacing and updating all phones, contracting technology services through Schoolhouse IT, rewiring and updating the internet infrastructure throughout the school, as well as providing our teachers and students with programs and curriculum used everyday in the classrooms. On average, the Technology Levy costs the taxpayers approximately $7.19 on a $100K house in the Elementary district and $8.11 on a $100K house in the High School district annually. Over the past few years, the district has made it a mission to be as conservative as possible with these funds and has been successful in doing so, creating a nice sized “savings” in the fund. If the voters should vote to renew the Technology Levy in both districts, we would adjust the yearly levy amount to accommodate the budgetary needs, which in turn would lower the taxpayer obligation. The district will be asking the voters to approve the renewal of the Technology Levy for an additional 10 years in the amount of $75,000 in both districts, for a total of $150,000 annually. The annual School Election will take place on May 7th and will be conducted by mail ballot. Ballots will be mailed out Monday, April 22nd. Regular voter registration closes on Monday, April 8th.
