The 50 Million Word Challenge is just a few weeks away! If you or your child participated in the challenge last year, you already know what it’s about, but here’s a quick refresher: as a school, we read as many words together as possible from March 1st to May 20th in the hopes of reaching a combined goal of 50 million words. Students take AR tests to record their word count and compete for a grand prize.

This year, however, we’ll be doing something a little different. Students will also bring home pledge sheets that families, businesses, or corporations can sign to pledge money if the student reaches a certain word count. This money will be used to buy sets of novels for as many classrooms as possible. For example, a business or family can pledge $250 if a student reads 50,000 words, and that cash will buy a classroom set of novels. If someone wants to pledge $5, that’s also great! These books will encourage students to read more and enjoy different types of literature. Get ready to read!
